Mass-market Bantam pbk. edition from the 1970s. The pages are a bit yellowed, but this is still a quite readable copy, intact and no underlining to text. The real attraction of this series, in any case, is the William Edwards cover art. Some minor soiling and slight rippling, a bit of creasing at edges, and a crease down spine, name of a former owner in marker written along top of text block. The accompanying photo is of the actual copy.

DJ is quite worn, with a 1.5 inch chip missing from the foot of the spine, which is sunned. There is edge-wear all around the DJ, as well as a 2 inch tear on the left side of the rear cover where the jacket flap meets the rear cover. Prior owner's inscription written on the front flyleaf. Text is clean.

New York: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation, 1928. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Good. 12mo. 395 pages. Hardcover bound in blue cloth. Some rubbing and wear to the binding; the cloth on the spine has some vertical creases. There is a 1928 owner's inscription on the front flyleaf, which also notes that this was a Book of the Month Club Selection (the title was a selection; this book is not a BOMC book). Stated "First Edition" on the copyright page.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1900. Hardcover. Fair. 12mo. 289 pages. A small book measuring 7 3/8 inches tall by just over 5 inches wide. Hardcover bound in blue cloth. Moderate rubbing and wear to the binding. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. The binding is slightly cocked but is sturdy. The endpapers are foxed, as well as some places in the text, especially around the illustrated plates. Signed on the title page by Dred Peacock (one of the best names ever). Illustrated with about nine full-page plates. Publisher's descriptive label pasted to the rear pastedown. The book is a novel set in late 18th century France. Dred Peacock (1864-1934) was a professor of Latin at Greensboro College. He went on to become President of the college. After he retired from this he practiced law, and at his death was the member of the board of trustees for Duke University and Greensboro College. New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1905. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Ethel Franklin Betts. 12mo. 260 pages. Hardcover bound in light purple cloth with cover designs embossed in gilt. The binding is rubbed, worn and a bit soiled from handling and is slightly cocked. Inner hinges secure. Illustrated with color plates. The tissue guard for the frontis is heavily foxed, and the title page also has foxing. Occasional stains in the text. Early owner's signature on the front pastedown and half title reads, "Bettie L. Nash." The Nash family was from North Carolina.

Small cracks evident near foot of spine. Inner front and rear hinges are secure. Text is toned. Newspaper clippings have been placed between pages 212 and 213. As a result, pages 210-215 are toned, with pages 212-213 being the darkest. Rear flyleaf and inner cover show slight foxing. Top edge of book is dusty.
